Bote Aiyappa Namme
Occurs every year
Lord Ayyappa (also known as Sarthavu) is a revered warrior deity in the Hindu tradition, believed to be the son of Lord Shiva and Mohini (the female incarnation of Lord Vishnu). He is widely worshipped for his valor, compassion, and ability to protect devotees from harm. Lord Ayyappa is especially venerated in South India, where he is regarded as a symbol of unity and righteousness.
Bote Aiyappa Namme is an annual festival dedicated to Lord Ayyappa, celebrated with deep devotion and vibrant community participation. The festival is observed in the month of February, with the “Kebbe”(cleaning in and around the temple) held on the first Saturday after Sankramana, followed by the main “Namme” celebration on the next Saturday. The festivities include traditional rituals, processions, offerings and Bolk Aat(A unique auspicious dance form of Kodava clan).
A unique aspect of this festival is the practice of offering clay dogs to Lord Ayyappa. Devotees present these clay figures as a fulfillment of vows, seeking the deity’s blessings for protection and the well-being of their families. This tradition reflects the deep faith and cultural heritage of the community, honoring Lord Ayyappa as a guardian and divine protector.
